Asbury’s Purpose

The transformation of the whole person through the love and power of Jesus Christ.

Romans 12:1&2

Asbury is a United Methodist church and our name comes from the first consecrated Methodist Bishop to the American Colonies, Francis Asbury. We are proud of our heritage and we hold true to our Methodist beliefs.

Asbury Church is a bible believing fellowship where the Scriptures are taught and preached. We believe that God has fully revealed Himself in Jesus Christ. God’s Word is truth and it is our guide for faith and practice.

Our desire is to walk in the Holy Spirit, thus we believe in the infilling of the Holy Spirit who is promised to every believer. The Spirit-filled life is a life of purpose. It is being made like Christ; shaped into His image.

As you read the following pages you will get a glimpse - a feel of what we believe as a church, but I would like to invite you to come and visit us and get to know us in person. We believe that Jesus loves and accepts each one of us where we are, and when we give our lives to Him, He begins the process of changing us into what He created us to be.

Growing in Jesus,

Pastor Dennis

Asbury Church Statement of Faith:

We believe in the One Living God Who exists in Three Persons:

God the Father
Who is infinite and perfect in
holiness, wisdom, and love.

Jesus Christ, His only Son
our Savior and Lord
who died for our sins and
was raised from the dead.

The Holy Spirit
who helps, teaches, guides,
and convicts the world of sin and
righteousness.

We Believe

We Believe that all have sinned, but God's grace is greater than human sin. (Romans 3:23, Romans 5:8)

We Believe Jesus Christ is God's offer of love to humanity and our only hope of salvation. (John 3:16, John 1:12)

We Believe in the universal church composed of all believers. (Matthew 16:18-19)

We Believe that the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments are the Word of God, fully inspired and the rule of faith and practice in our lives. (2 Timothy 3:16)

We Believe in the personal, visible return of Jesus Christ to the earth. (1 Thessalonians 4:16)

We Believe in the historic creeds of the church (i.e., Apostles' Creed).

We Believe that faith and works belong together as salvation leads persons to Christian mission. (James 2:17)

We Believe in water baptism as a symbol of new life, forgiveness of sins, and God's love. (Matthew 28:19-20)

We Believe in Holy Communion as a meal open to all believers, which symbolizes the body and blood of Jesus Christ. (1 Corinthians 4:26)

We Believe in the laying on of hands for praying for the empowerment of the Holy Spirit and the Spirit-filled life. (1 Timothy 4:14)

ASBURY’S AFFIRMATION OF FAITH

I believe that Jesus has all authority in heaven and on earth (Matthew 28:18), and that He is the head over all rule and authority (Colossians 2:10). I believe that Satan and his demons are subject to me in Christ because I am a member of Christ's body (Ephesians 1:19-23). I therefore obey the command to resist the devil (James 47), and I command him in the name of Christ to leave my presence.

I believe that apart form Christ I can do nothing (John 15:5), so I declare my dependence on Him. I choose to abide in Christ in order to bear much fruit and glorify the Lord (John 15:8). I announce to Satan that Jesus is my Lord (1corinthians 12:3), and I reject any counterfeit gifts or works of Satan in my life.

I believe that the truth will set me free (John 8:32), and that walking in the light is the only path of fellowship (1 John1::7). Therefore, I stand against Satan's deception by taking every thought captive in obedience to Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5). I declare that the Bible is the only authoritative standard (2 Timothy 3:15-17). I choose to speak the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15).

I choose to present my body as an instrument of righteousness, a living and holy sacrifice, and I renew my mind by the living Word of God in order that I may prove that the will of God is good, acceptable and perfect (Romans 6:13; 12:1, 2).
