We chose a married couple that we have known for 50 years. The husband is 80 years and has had really bad luck with business and employment plus being in ill health. His wife is also in ill health due to diabetes and previous breast cancer. At this point in life, they are financially worn—about to lose their home, problems affording medications for her diabetes and related complications, are on Medicare and social security (due to his self employment, little SS input in previous years; she assisted him in his employment so did not contribute to social security). We feel that they are in extreme need so used the pay-it-forward monies to purchase groceries and home necessities (toilet paper, napkins, paper towels, and laundry essentials) as well as a warm jacket for her. We plan to continue our support throughout 2010 by “surprising” them with meals and necessities. For March, we plan to provide the fixings for a St. Patrick’s Day dinner (corned beef, cabbage, new potatoes, salad, and dessert). We also are hoping they will return to knowing Jesus and perhaps visit Asbury.
We gave them a card (using information off the Asbury Pay It Forward website) explaining the Pay It Forward program and reason we selected them.

I was at our local gas station on Sunday after church, and there was a homeless man sitting in front on his bag of stuff. I am very uncomfortable approaching people and just telling them about my faith, and have never done so before, but I though, give it a try. My hands shaking I walked up to the gentleman, told him that our church was “giving away money”, asked him if he would take our $20 and said “God Bless.”. He said yes, and smiled just a little bit.

We’ve been praying about how to use the 10 dollars of pay it forward. My daughter lost her job awhile ago and has not asked for help until today and was needing some money to get milk for the kids so we gave her the money and she was so thankful and said she hadnt heard of a church doing that so it lead to a great conversation about Asbury Church

A message from Senior Pastor Dennis Wallace | February 24, 2010

Hello Asbury Family!

Thanks so much for your prayers for the Kansas West Conference team that traveled to Zimbabwe, Africa a few weeks ago. It was a great – awesome time. We have met with Bishop Jones upon our return and we will be presenting to our Annual Conference that we partner with the Zimbabwe East Annual Conference to advance the work of the Kingdom together. One of those ways is for local churches to be paired with a sister church in Zimbabwe. I will be discussing this with the Asbury Missions team and to the Asbury Church Board. What a great way to learn from each other. I saw God do some awesome things while in Zimbabwe.

ASBURY MISSION TRIP
On February 28th I leave with a team from Asbury (Pastors Mitch Arbelaez and Greg Hall) for Kenya. We will teaching pastors and preaching each evening. Please pray that God will use us in a mighty way. We also would ask God to minister to us as well. We will return on March 16th. On behalf of the team I want to thank you Asbury for the generous way in which you have given so that this trip and my trip to Zimbabwe could take place. We too believe our ministry is Asbury’s ministry and you have overwhelming expressed that from your gracious giving in order to send us. Thank you so much!

PAY IT FORWARD
The testimonies of our Pay it Forward ministry continue to stream in and I cannot tell you how blessed I am to hear them. What a difference you are making in people’s lives! This Sunday, February 28th we will celebrate the story of Pay it Forward across our network.
For additional testimonies please go to our church web page.

TRANSFORMATIONS
As I returned home from Zimbabwe I was greeted by a pile of things on my desk but the greatest joy was found in three emails. Pastor Jerred, the Central Campus Children’s Pastor was sharing with me about a young boy who gave his life to Jesus at the Wednesday evening Children’s Blast. He had been coming for about three weeks and on that third week he told Pastor Jerred he wanted to ask Jesus into his heart.

The second blessing was an email from Pastor Aaron Wallace of the Asbury Church West Campus. It was the story of a young family who had recently started attending the Asbury Church West Campus. They told him they had found the church home they were looking for and in essence said they were “rolling up their sleeves” and ready to make a difference for Jesus!

And what about the youth ministry at Asbury? Pastor Pete Goodman, the Central Campus High School and Young Adult Pastor sent me an email of a High School student who was to be baptized at Asbury and he invited his friend to the VOX Youth Group that Wednesday night to share the moment with him. The invited student told Pastor Pete he did not believe in God and not to try and “save” him. None the less, the young man returned to youth group the following Wednesday night and he continued to come for many weeks. That young man – the one who said he did not believe in God, he found God and gave his life to Him!
In the last month, we have had 12 youth and 6 children baptized!

PRAYER
There are many ways in which God is leading us as His Church. May I ask you to please pray for the following? I will share with your more upon my return from Africa. Please add these prayers to your prayer list and seek God with me.

1. The Asbury leadership will meet for a Leadership Summit on March 27th.

2. Our Stewardship Campaign which will begin this fall.

3. The growth of the Breakthru Campus which is leading us to start a new Breakthru service on Sunday’s at the 9:15am hour in the gym.

4. The Asbury missions team in Africa and the many other missions teams from our congregation that will be sent out at other times this year.

As always, you are dear to my heart. I love you Asbury!

In Jesus Name,

Dennis Wallace
Senior Pastor, Asbury Church
