Sermon Series Study Questions
“Games We Play”
March 2010
The following questions are for personal reflection or for group interaction.
They are based on the Sermon Series preached at all Asbury Campuses during the time period as noted:
Questions based on the March 7 Message: “Creating God in our Image”
- According to Genesis 1, we are created in God’s image. Yet the title of this message is “Creating God in our Image.” How do you think people create their own image of God? What is this based on?
- What do we know about God and how do we know this? How is He different from us?
- How would YOU define “holiness?” Why is holiness important?
- How would you define “obedience?” Why is obedience to God important?
- How are you susceptible to creating a false image of God? How does this affect your pursuit of holiness and willingness to be obedient?
- Do you find that your relationship with the Lord can (at times) border on a “business/transactional” relationship? Why does this happen?
- If Jesus came into your house, your “life,” how would He respond: like He did in the Temple (see Luke 19:45-58) like His entrance into Jerusalem (Luke 19:28-42), or like His time at the home of Mary and Martha (Luke 10:38-42)? Why?
Questions based on the March 14 Message: “Creating False Temples”
- If you were to write a definition of yourself, what would you say? What is the proof that this is an accurate, authentic definition?
- What is the purpose of the Temple (see Exodus 25:8; 2 Chronicles 6:17-21; Matthew 21:13; 1 Corinthians 6:19; Ephesians 2:19-22; Rev. 21:3-4)?
- Read Luke 8:45—19:6. What are the warnings Jesus gives in this passage? To whom is He speaking? Why does He make the statements that He does?
- We know the Lord desires intimate fellowship with us, both on a personal and also on a corporate level. What happens to this when we define ourselves by our works, by where we live, our activities etc?
Questions based on the March 28 Message: “Functional Saviors”
- Has the Lord ever tried to get your attention, tell you something or in any way tried to communicate with you, but you have ignored Him or changed the subject? Why?
- A “Functional Savior” is anything, anyone or any habit that satisfies us but has no ability to transform or forgive. We can’t have a REAL “relationship” with Functional Saviors because we are using them for our purposes alone. Can you identify those things, people or habits that could be Functional Saviors in someone’s life?
- Read Luke 19:37-44. Based on this passage and what you know of them, what would you say were the “Functional Saviors” of the Pharisees and the people of Jerusalem?
- Why is Jesus such a threat to “Functional Saviors?”
- What happens when we “fail” our “Functional Saviors?” What happens when we fail the TRUE Savior?
- Are you willing to recognize the “Functional Savior(s)” in your life? Take some time to reflect and pray about this. Are you willing and ready to abandon all to follow the TRUE Savior—even to the cross?
